Łódzkie voivodeship is exceptional for the number and the diversity of its museums and museum establishments. There are over 70 such institutions, 1/4 of which is located in Łódź and those are usually large national or at least cross-regional museums with main premises located in historic 19th and early 20th century buildings. The museums of Łódź tempt with unique collections and their artistic initiatives and research help them occupy an important place in the cultural and academic map of Poland. The most esteemed of all the museums in the region in the Museum of Art in Łódź, established in 1930 as the Julian and Kazimierz Bartoszewicz (donours of a rich art collection) City Museum of History and Art. It is a unique museum in Poland and it is highly regarded internationally. It was one of the first European museums dedicated mostly to modern art. Today, the collections of the Museum include 10,000 exhibits and are divided into the following sections: Polish Art, Foreign Art, Modern Printmaking and Drawing, Photography and Visual Art, etc. The seat of the Museum is located in a Neo-Renaissance Poznański’s Palace at ul. Więckowskiego 36. Other museums in Łódź are: Central Museum of Textiles, Museum of the City of Łódź, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, Museum of Cinematography, Muzeum Oświaty Łódzkiej (Museum of Education in Łódź), Muzeum Przyrodnicze Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (Natural Museum of the University of Łódź), Muzeum Tradycji Niepodległościowych (Museum of the Fight for Independence), Muzeum Geologiczne (Museum of Geology), Book Art Museum and Muzeum Archidiecezji Łódzkiej (Museum of the Łódź Archdiocese). Other cities and towns of the region host regional and district museums, municipal museums, small museum establishments of different scope and rural construction parks. Museums of this type are usually located in mediaeval castles, palaces, manors and historic tenement houses gathering collections related to their towns or the surrounding regions. Such museums are located in: Bełchatów, Głowno, Kutno, Łęczyca, Łowicz, Opoczno, Pabianice, Poddębice, Rawa Mazowiecka, Sieradz, Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Wieluń and Zgierz. Interesting, often extremely original collections are gathered by small, specialised museums, such as Muzeum Miasta i Rzeki Warty w Warcie (Museum of Warta City and River in Warta), Muzeum Oświatowe im. Marii Konopnickiej w Bronowie (Maria Konopnicka Museum of Education in Bronowo), museums of manor interiors in Ożarów and Tubądzin, museum in Nieborów and Arkadia which is a division of the National Museum in Warsaw and Muzeum im.
